Falling Buoys

Project 1

Day 1

September,11 - 17, 2018

I started off by creating the model of my buoy. I then proceeded to do a camera match and align the sphere, cube, and stairs appropriately. I did a rough match of where the shadow should be.

I was unable to go out and shoot my own images for this project so I used images these images here that where provided to the class. If I were able to have time to re-shoot I would love to have my body’s fall over a park bench. I wanted to have multiples of them falling in order to make the scene more visually interesting.

It took me some time to get the simulation correct but I was able to produce a final sim that had the buoy’s rolling upright (for the most part) down the stairs.

Day 2

September,18 - 19, 2018

This is a test render of my initial layout once I began to composite in Nuke and created the basic render layers.

I've got to work on adjusting the shadow placement to be more accurate. I also need to do some color correcting on the shadow but so far a good start. There is a subtle difference in between the clean plate and grey ball image. I will probably color correct the grey ball image to mach with the clean plate.

Day 3

September,20 - 24, 2018

Here are some render test stills I did to look at the movement of the ball as they fall down the stairs. Here I added my shadow projection to obtain the darker shadows since I couldn't create any proxy geometry. Overall pretty happy with the progress. I need to tweak some color correcting and creating a better shadow projection to fill in some holes. After that, this scene should be all set for my buoys to be rendered in.

Day 4

September,25, 2018

Here are some final composites of the balls and buoys’ on the stairs. I still have things that I would like to tweak for this. The main aspect I would like to be able to figure out how to get a darker shadow in the grout. I would also like to play around with getting a better color correction on the shadow. I would also want to tweak the occlusion passes and get them more accurate. I ran under some rendering time constraints so I would like to get the rest of my frames rendered to improve on this project.

Overall I had a really good time working on this project. I learned a lot more about how each layer worked and affected the whole of the image and how it was interpreted into nuke. There is still room for improvement on this project but I am happy at the result I achieved.
